Choose a Career that you Enjoy - StudentScholarships.org
Throughout my life I have always been an observer. Even as a child, my mother said I always sat watching my siblings play rather than join in. As I grew older, there was always something I observed about professionals that I came into contact with: those that enjoyed what they were doing were pleasant to interact with and very good at what they did. Those who clearly didn’t enjoy their jobs were rude, inefficient and sloppy. I’ve always sworn that I would not end up as one of those poor souls; trapped in a web of my own making. So it would appear that I’ve made this question quite easy to answer: just pick a career you enjoy. Life is unfortunately not that simple, not since I was five and wanted to be a pilot, doctor, and astronaut. There are aspects of my personality that seem determined to complicate this question.
I’m an insufferable second-guesser. This means, I have no problem making decisions but always question whether I made the best one or not. Truth be told, I’m literally terrified of “the real world.” I can think of numerous careers I’d be interested in, and many that I know I’d be successful at. The problem is I can’t seem to decide which career in particular I’d like to pursue. I’m sure I’d do well in almost any, but I’d always wonder whether I could’ve gotten a better job. This question is also complicated by my family background.
I am the middle child of six, so naturally I always strive to stand out and be original. I also hail from a town where half the residents have always lived here and their children hope to do the same. Because of both of these factors, I’m desperate to pursue a career where I can be more than just some guy working in some office doing something.
It’s not that I want to be famous and have everyone love me; I’m actually rather embarrassed when people compliment me. I just want to change the world. I want to do something like no one has ever done it before. I want the whole world to know me, and to be glad I was here. I’m not a fool. I know there is no way to accomplish this, but I’d certainly like to try.
So I guess if I were to actually answer your question, I’d say this: I have to decide whether I’m willing to risk the rest of my life on a career that few succeed at, in the hopes of being successful and effective. Or am I afraid that if I reach for the stars, I’ll realize how truly far they are?
