Where can I learn to build my own computer?

Smoothie asked:

For the past year I have wanted to build a new computer. I think I am pretty well qualified to do the job. I have changed out parts on my old machine a few times. I have been trying to keep up on the latest technologies and all that good stuff.

I know that computer technology evolves extremely quick, so I was hoping to be directed to a resource that is updated frequently so it will be up do date. I suppose I am looking for both general reading on the subject, and even more importantly an in depth step by step walkthrough of the process.

Thanks for all your help!

There’s lots of pros and cons of doing it. Computers are so cheap now its almost not worth the trouble. Besides new computers come with an operating system. If you build your own, you are supposed to buy a copy of windows. You also always get a bunch of free software to try. Free software is both a pro and a con.

It is worth it, if you’re a computer person.

Buying cheap prebuilt is exactly what you get.

The only con to building yourself is maintaining the system with upgrades. You will spend more money down the road, but it beats buying a new system every 2-3 years.

Parts can die on you which will need to be replaced, it shouldn’t happen but it does.

Browse computer sites for guides, but take the time and learn, people try to rush off and buy parts to build and it doesn’t work.

But there are tons of PROS to it.
